Bear Cub BITES 14 students at Washington University

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Libbie Higgins, also known as Internet persona Aunt Claudette, was appalled when she heard a bear cub would be put down after biting 14 students at Washington University in St. Louis this weekend. “It is not OK to take wild animals to a petting zoo,” Higgins said. “It seems like people thought that the people were more important than the animal, but they’re not. The animal had no choice in being there.”

Officials initially feared the bear had rabies, as it's not a domesticated animal. Once health officials cleared the bear of having rabies, they were able to spare its life. See more reporting on this story from CNN affiliate KSDK.

As for what inspired Higgins to follow this story, she said, “I think that humor lightens the issue a little bit and makes people think more about there is a point here. Really you shouldn’t be taking bear cubs to the petting zoo.”
