Expect aftershocks – Phl weather bureau

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday said people in areas affected by a magnitude-5.7 earthquake can expect aftershocks.
Phivolcs issued the warning shortly after an earthquake jolted the province of Davao Occidental in Southern Philippines Friday afternoon
In its bulletin, the agency said the tremor occurred at 1:44 p.m. with its epicenter traced 31 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
Phivolcs said the temblor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 113 kilometers.
The agency said that the cities of Davao and Mati felt the tremor at Intensity 4.
Phivolcs described an Intensity 4 quake as moderately strong and is felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened.
It causes vibration like the “passing of a heavy truck;" hanging objects swing considerably; dinner plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle while floors and walls of wood framed-buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly.
Intensity 3 was recorded in Bislig, Surigao del Sur, and Tagum City, Davao del Norte; and Intensity 1 in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.
Phivolcs said there was no casualty or damage reported from the quake.
The agency said people in the affected areas can expect aftershocks.
The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 20 to 25 earthquakes per day -- mostly imperceptible -- are common.
