    Visited all 50 states?

    A Letter to My Children

You sometimes ask why we don't buy you the latest phone or sparkly shoes. You ask why we don't drive newer cars or have cable tv. You see, your dad and I have decided to take this window of your childhood and fill it with experiences, not things. When we first thought about how to do this we hatched a plan to take all 5 of you to all 50 states.

Nico, remember sitting in the darkness and drizzling rain and then seeing the Presidents illuminated by the spotlights at Mount Rushmore? Marisa, remember looking out the minivan window driving into Yosemite and asking if the white dusting on the ground was sand, salt or snow? Natalie, remember driving through Teddy Roosevelt National Park and being surrounded in the minivan by bison? You lost count at 17. Gabriela, remember asking the tour guide if all of the tea tossed in Boston Harbor was the same kind of tea? Chip, remember trying lobster at the lobster pound in Trenton, ME? Remember the javelinas or the tide pools in the Bay of Fundy?

You see, these experiences were new to you and also you dad and me too. As our journey to see all 50 states together is nearly complete, I wonder if you've enjoyed it as much as we have.

I see glimmers of it when Chip makes cliff dwellings reminiscent of Mesa Verde. When Gabriela does her Revolutionary War project from knowledge gained from the Freedom Trail tour. When Natalie rattles off the importance of Brown-vs-Board of Education. When Marisa classifies types of slugs found in the Ho Rain Forest. When Nico sculpts his mashed potatoes into Devil's Tower.

You see, there is no app for this. There's no possibility of it showing up on our doorstep in a box. It can't be DVR'd to watch later.

Thank you for joining us on this amazing journey. The time spent with you along the way has been our greatest gift to each other and I hope you will agree. Love, Mom
