    Solar energy as a potential source of renewable energy


    The dependence on renewal energy sources should increase, so that there will be the demand on traditional, depleting and pollution causing sources of energy can be minimized. EERE (Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy) plays an important role in this context. It operates a large network of researches spread across the length and breadth of the country. Renewable sources of energy such as solar, geothermal, wind and water can be used to power lights and run various appliances at homes, offices and manufacturing facilities. It is also possible to attempt sustainable transportation. The strategy includes the development of innovative and cutting edge technologies through which renewable energy generation will be highly competitive and it will be considered as an alternative to traditional sources of energy.


    Solar energy as a source of renewable energy


    EERE works on concentration of solar power. Solar energy systems will be developed which will supply the power on demand by using thermal storage. The grid operation impacts will be minimized. Solar energy is made cost-effective and highly competitive through the development of photovoltaic cells. The solar energy that is generated at the dome will be integrated with national power grid in an efficient manner. Through solar water heating programs at utilities, utilities will be made to learn about various solar water heating programs so that they will develop their own systems.


    Research, manufacturing and market solutions for solar energy is carried out by solar energy technology officer (SETO). It is a nationwide collaborative whose purpose is to make solar energy, highly efficient in terms of production and maintenance.


    Solar America Initiative (SAI) is taken by Federal Advanced Energy Initiative through which the development of advanced photovoltaic materials is developed at a highly competitive cost factor.


    Solar power statistics


    Solar power production accounts for 0.307 quadrillion BTU in 2013. The projects figures for 2014 and 2015 are 0.412 and 0.484 quadrillion BTU respectively.


    Concentrating solar power (CSP) technology is helpful to develop energy by using mirrors. Hundreds of thousands of mirrors are used so that solar heat will be utilized to generate electricity. By deploying one CSP unit, it is possible to power 70,000 homes. Thus, CSP technology has great prospects in the utilization of solar energy.


    Of the total domestic electricity production, 12.1% is accounted for renewable energy in the United States. California is the leading State which accounts for 20% of this power. Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) produce 354 MW of power. This is achieved through the plants spread over 1000 acres by installing around 400,000 mirrors. Parabolic solar thermal energy is used to generate solar power. 64MW of power is generated through Nevada Solar One. There are a number of ‘under construction’ solar projects which are spread across the nation, including Ivanpah Solar Power Facility has the capacity of 392 MW. It is under construction in southeastern California.


    The land utilized by solar power plants is less compared with the land utilized by the hydroelectric power projects. It is also less than the size of coal based power plants. The Sun burns hotter in the western desert and there was easy access to power transmission as well. The summer capacity of Solar Photovoltaic Electricity Generation is 4.98 GW in 2013. In 2013, 85.13% of yearly growth of generating capacity is achieved.


    Solar water heating


    The dependence on solar water heating is increasing at a constant pace. 1.5 million Homes and businesses are depending upon solar water heating systems in the United States. It represents a capacity of 1000 MW of thermal energy generation. It is estimated that 40% of the homes in United States have access to sunlight through which 29 million solar water heaters can be installed.


    The performance of solar water heating systems will depend upon the amount of solar energy available at the site. The energy generated is also dependent upon the temperature of the incoming cold water. By using the solar water heating systems, the dependence on traditional energy sources can be reduced.


    The US Department of Energy (DOE) supports innovative and cost-effective solutions through which solar energy will be integrated with the power grid in a seamless way. The associated costs and risks are reduced by ensuring the reliability of safe and secure technologies.
