California wildfires change landscapes and sunsets

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     jimginsd watched plumes of smoke drift into the sky over his home in Carlsbad, California, on May 15. He says the smoke was coming from wildfires burning in other regions of Southern California. 'We saw and heard a constant hum of firefighting aircrafts,' he said. He says with all the smoke in the air the sunsets looked more dramatic late in the afternoons. 'The smoke has added particles to the sky these particles reflect sunlight differently causing multiple colors to appear especially as the sun nears the horizon,' he explained. 'Living in California my whole life, we become accustomed to wildfires and billowing clouds of smoke. This fire, however, was as close as I have been to having to leave my home due to fire.'

San Diego has had horrible fires the past 3 days with sweltering heat. As a by-product of the smoke we have also had stunning multi colored sunsets...these photos were taken the past two evenings at the Ocean Beach Pier. The Ocean Beach Pier is 5 miles from San Diego...
