When I Found My Birth Parents in Russia

My name is Alex Gilbert and I am 22 years old. In 2013 I met my Birth Parents for the first time in Russia. I am a New Zealander and currently live in Auckland. I was adopted out of Russia at the age of 2 and was picked up by my NZ parents in 1994.

I managed to track them down with Social Media and then flew over to Russia late 2013 and meet them for the first time. This was made into a NZ Television story on a Current Affairs show. I would like to share my story and be sure to see the video. I have also written a book called "My Russian Side" to share my story.

It all started early 2013 when I was doing a search online with only having my birth parents names on paper. I was able to search these names in various Russian Social network websites. It was incredible for me as only last year I was able to see what my birth parents looked like for the first time. I felt like my family grew very fast and my parents here in NZ love the fact that I managed to track them down.

My birth mother was the first on my biological side I managed to get in touch with. She now lives in Rybinsk, Russia and lives in a small apartment in the town. I phoned her for the first time last year for her birthday!. She then gave me details on my birth father who now lives in St Petersburg and has a wife and a 1 year old daughter.

It was a long journey and this has changed my life and my Mum and Dads life too. My story can be found on my website and on my YouTube channel.
