WEINSTEIN ANNOUNCES "GILLIGAN'S ISLAND" REBOOT
“All of us at the Weinstein Company are thrilled to have pulled together such an amazing cast,” Weinstein said. The movie version, he added, will provide more depth to the one-dimensional characters that TV viewers knew. “We decided that Gilligan was a member of the Navy, but was court-martialed for watching online porn during a terrorist attack. And the Skipper commanded a cruise ship until it drifted at sea for two weeks when the engines broke down during an onboard stomach virus epidemic. He and Gilligan found each other when nobody else wanted them. In a way, it’s kind of a platonic love story.”
Weinstein said that "Gilligan’s Island," budgeted at $200-million, will be about the castaways fighting aliens from outer space for control of the island. “It’s a metaphor for the current immigration battle currently going in America,” he stated. “Are we just going to keep thinking of them as invaders, or welcome them to the land of opportunity? That was why we cast Denzel and Sofia. We wanted to make this Gilligan’s Island more inclusive.”
"Gilligan’s Island" is scheduled for a Christmas 2015 release.
