    Your modern family

    Native fusion!

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     nalakans is an ethnic blend of Mexican, Hawaiian, and African America heritage while her husband is Alutiiq Eskimo and Spanish. They met in Alaska while both working for the same corporation. She says race has never been an issue in their relationship and she attributes that to the fact that they were both raised in multicultural homes. She says depending on where they are, strangers do ask them about their racial background. 'We will sometimes have strangers try and tell us what our family's race and ethnicity is by attempting to guess while ignoring what we tell them we are,’ she said. Sometimes the negative reactions, comments and stares bother her and her family. ‘But for the most part we welcome questions and love to share our culture with those you are interested,’ she added. She describes her family as beautifully diverse and intelligent. 'I would consider my family to be a modern family because there are five different races in our family, we speak 4 different languages, and my husband and I are well educated and contribute positively to society and the diverse growth of America,’ she said.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

My husband and I met in Anchorage, AK. He is Alutiiq Eskimo(his father) and Spanish Basque(his mother). I am Mexican American and Hawaiian (my father) and African American (my mother). Together we have three children who are a combination of us both. Needless to say, they will be getting a lot of scholarships!!
