    The Knowing Generation

There’s a generation of Poles who have lived through so much that to call them “wise” doesn't seem a sufficient descriptor. This generation knew the terror of German occupation and the destruction of their country and people during World War II. They knew the blight and degradation of decades of Soviet-imposed communist rule that followed the war. They saw the rise of Solidarity and the coming together of a people to break free of the iron fist. And after all those years, all those decades, they finally got to taste the freedom that should have been theirs all along.

The picture is of my grandma ,“Babcia” in Polish, on the right, and her older sister, on the left. One of my favorite things about going back to Poland is hearing the stories and gleaning a bit of the knowledge from my Babcia.

And in case you’re wondering, they’re smiling because life is good.
