Mom & I Were Rockin' the 60's fashion scene!

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Varvara51 told me, 'It was the afternoon of September 1965 and the occasion was a very formal “Freshman Mother/Daughter” luncheon to be held at my new High School in Sierra Madre, California. With lots of help from the nuns in my 8th grade class and excessive studying, I managed to get into this rather exclusive high school in the Sierra Madre Hills (Alverno Heights Academy). Most of the girls who went to the school were rich and from upper class families but my family was a pretty average middle-class bunch. We weren’t used to putting on airs or hobnobbing with celebrities. In fact, we were pretty nervous about the whole thing because Mom wanted to make me proud and I just wanted to blend in. We really didn’t know what to wear so we turned to my aunt, who ran the catering office an an exclusive club in downtown LA (The Jonathan Club) because she was the family expert of fashion. At her work, she watched the ‘high society’ ladies come in and out of the restaurant in the club all day and knew how they dressed for luncheons. So, with the help of my Auntie Evie, this photo is how we ended up dressed. We thought we looked pretty good. :-) Gloves, hats and attitudes were all in place when we drove to the luncheon. We were definitely one of the ‘groovy’ Mom/Daughter teams at the event.'

My Mom and I were rockin' the latest fashions for a formal Freshman Mother/Daughter luncheon at my high school in 1965. Gloves, really?! And our hats were divine! My Aunt worked in the catering office of a very exclusive club in downtown Los Angeles. She saw the 'society ladies' going in and out of the club all day long.  We decided to let her choose our outfits for this very important event since she was considered the family expert on the latest fashion.  This photo shows the result of what we all thought classy ladies should look like in 1965.  We were definitely groovy!
