    The best things about Poland

    Poland: Central Europe's fun-lover

One of the things I love about Poland, that I think visitors find most immediately endearing about the people, is their innate sense of humour. Poles love a practical joke, a well-told story that starts with chuckles and ends with a belly laugh, and basically anything that takes the piss... The light-hearted end of a national character ill-suited to pompous authority and joyless regimentation, that at the other end turns into a 'grin in the face of adversary' mettle that has seen the country through times that were anything but funny.

Poles' sense of humour goes hand-in-hand with their love of festivity and social get-togethers, and while the tendency of tourists is to recall the amazing sights, hearty food and epic history, the theme I realised has been most prevalent throughout my holidays there was people engaging in everyday comedy, making instant friends and priceless memories through shared joviality - sometimes at the cost of a hefty hangover. It's only when you exit Poland and find yourself in gloomy Budapest, say, or beautiful but oh-so-serious Vienna, do you realise how special, how intrinsic and how very Polish this characteristic is.
