    A trip to the airport

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     BornTheUSA told me, 'I am the daughter of an immigrant. My father came from Germany in 1956. My mother’s father was also from Germany. I’m about a year old in this picture, so I can safely say that the picture was taken in 1961. We hosted many visiting family members as they came to the USA. Going to the airport to greet or send off family was always a big deal. It really was customary at the time to be at the airport or to even travel dressed in your Sunday best. As the daughter of an immigrant, those visits to the airport have been a lasting lifetime memory of a way to connect to my far-away family members. My picture albums are peppered with airport photos documenting our anticipation of arrival or bittersweet good byes of each visit all the way up to today. '

1961, I'm the baby in the arms of my dad. A trip to the airport to pick up visiting family was an occasion to get dressed up.
