1968 Candy Apple Red VW Beetle

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Ryn was 19 years old when she got her 1968 Volkswagen Beetle. She was ecstatic to find the candy apple red Beetle on the used car lot because it went well with her red, white and blue peace decal that she had been saving for her first car.

Although these photos were made in 1971, my very favorite car of all times was my 1968 Candy Apple Red VW Beetle.
My sweet new husband came home from an overseas leave for a couple of weeks. One agenda was to purchase a suitable car for me to drive after he went back When he left for his over seas 18 month tour he left me with his 1964 white Impala Chevy. I knew what I wanted and it had to a 1960 something VW Beetle, preferably a red one.
Needless to say we managed to find just what I was looking for. With gas being twenty-six cents a gallon, I could go forever on $3.00. It did take me a while to get used to the straight shift. I will never forget the first time I drove to work at the local hospital, having go up this long very steep hill with a red light....I am glad to say I conquered that hill and smiled every day I traveled it.
Oh how I loved that car and so wish I still had it today.
I thought I was pretty kool with my red white and blue peace sign on the back window.
When the' youngins' started coming the VW had to go.
