Illadelp: A Man following his dreams!!!
What do you call a man who has a passion for Music, Acting, Poetry, Radio host, Business Man, and Father…… Kenyatta Parker aka "Illadelp"!!! From his humble beginnings in North Philadelphia to his tenure serving in the United States Marine Corps, to his journey in the music business, Illadelp has went from living a dream to making his dream a reality, along with evolving into his destiny.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Mr. illadelp and checking up with him regarding his journey, brand, and future…
What made you enter into the music industry and what do you feel you have to offer?
The life I saw on TV, passion as far as the music that was inside of me, and something my daughters would be proud of. I dare to be different, “I am ME” I don’t try to be nobody else, although I have a lot of role models. I am confident in me. I have a lot of creativity, talent, and have a different perspective. I think outside of the box, very original and just me being me.
What style of music do you do, and how successful has it been for you getting placements, deals, opportunities, etc.
I can’t categorize myself, I pattern myself after a lot of artists, I am considered, Hip Hop, R & B, Neo Soul, you can’t put me in one box. I give a different sound on all my music, some people like a variety. Placements come easy. I have done various shows, placements for mixtapes, I have not received any serious placements, though. I have not received any industry or indie deals, I have met with various people who have done various things, but no contracts. I have kind of stepped away from that deal though because I know deals are far and in between or I have not met the right person. But that is a big inspiration for me.
With the shift in music and record labels, where do you see your music journey in 5 years?
With everything that is taking place in the industry, If I don’t do it myself, I don’t see it happening. I see the type of deals labels are giving out and for me, Creating my own path and finding a way for those people to want to come find me is what I am trying to do. I love the music and respect the music, but if I am not signed, it does not matter, and if I am, that's great too… but in 5 years if I am not successful in music, then I will be that guy behind the scene with music, I won’t be that guy on the stage.
We all know that everyone needs additional hustles, what other industries are you apart of?
I am currently working on getting my book published (poetry), I currently working on an independent film being the STAR and LEAD ACTOR for that it’s called “Tri-Angles”, mixtapes, getting ready to do a couple showcases; 4th of July weekend I will be in Miami, then New York mid-July, and I am looking to go to Chicago in August. I am also a Radioshow Host. I am kinda everywhere but looking to narrow it down.
Define your brand and why should people invest in you?
My brand is ME, it’s who I am.. In order to understand my brand, you would have to take the time to know me, find out why I am who I am.
My music best describe me, from the music I did for my daughters to the music I do for the streets. To know me, is to understand my brand. I bring a lot to the table. People should invest in me because I know that if I have the right financial backing, I know I would be able to give those people a big return. It’s a matter of me being in front of the right people or inspired by the right person in order to achieve excellence. I tell myself everyday, you are just one person away from meeting the right person. To invest in me, is to get what you put into me.
So you just recently accepted a role as a leading actor in a web series, what made you become an actor and do you have any formal training?
Negative, I have no formal training; I think my character is who I am. Acting is not an easy job, but we spend everyday acting. And since this allows me to be me, it’s easier that way. They saw me, they visualized me in the role, and they linked up with me and said hey, you need to do this. If I can, I will accept other roles. I can not say that I am an Actor, I can say that I am an inspired Actor. I have been told often that I could do acting because I have the look or be a mode because I am very photogenic. If the offer came up again, I would accept it.
What makes you stand out from other artist, actors, radio host, and overall business people?
For the artist, I try to be original. Nowadays you can put every artist in the booth and they will all come out the same. I dare to be different and stay in own lane which has helped me gain my followers. For the Radio host, I am me and it has helped me out greatly, although I have a lot of people who inspired me, It’s all about gaining your own personality and just being your own person. Originally separates me for any and everything.
They say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, has this journey felt like work or a vacation for you.
Both!!! It’s hard because you still have to learn the business and sometimes learning ain’t easy. Learning can be a painful job, a job that leaves you hungry at night, or wondering why you are investing so much into something that isn’t returning anything, or sometimes you have to take money away from your kids to do what you need to do. I have seen a lot of hardship, but blessed to have good supporters and mentor. I have invested a lot of money and I haven’t received a return on it yet. But on the other hand, it’s been rewarding because I have gained followers, supporters, and people who will let you lead them into hell’s fire if you have too. If you go, they go…
You went from Kenyatta to the Marine, to the Artist, now the Business Man, what’s next for you?
I don’t know, I really don’t know. I am open to all aspects and possibilities. I have transitioned into these different roles by default by me wanting to grow and expand in the industry. If I had to say who I would be, from the artist to the business man to whatever, at the end of the day, I would say a “Household Name”.
If you could change one thing in your journey, what would it be and why?
It would be me, I would change me!! I have made a lot of mistakes due to my arrogance, trying to learn but not making myself teachable. Wishing I would have took the time to listen because a lot of the things I heard back then, I see clearly now.
Why should people want to get to know you?
I am genuine! To be honest, what you see is what you get. Although, I am subject to change!! I am courteous and kind, that’s from the heart, that morals. I can produce on an executive level or artist level, whoever I am and whatever I need to be in order to bring you the best in me. I always rise to the challenge. Understand the God in me, how I operate, and why I hold my daughters so close, I try to be me. The way I am, is what you hear in my music.
