CNN PRODUCER NOTE Abraham Raphael spent the past 10 years piecing together what happened to his grandfather Sergeant Lieutenant David P. Towns of unit 237. Through old footage shot by one of Towns' comrades during World War II and independent research, Raphael learned recently that his grandfather, who was a part of the combat engineer battalion, survived the storming of Normandy 70 years ago, only to die two days later during a false surrender by a German unit. He shared this footage with his father, Dr. David Towns Raphael, and says he father was overwhelmed to finally learn what happened. 'It was a tedious process to figure out. But I knew what he looked like the day he died, and I knew what he was doing that morning. I was elated to show my dad,' he said.
