    Kids and guns

    When I was 10 I almos shot a man

When I was 10 years old I found my Grandpa Jake's old rusted vintage single barrel 10 gauge shot gun hidden in my Father's closet. I also found shells hidden in the bottom drawer of his dresser. I was tempted to load it and fire right then and there. But knowing that I would "get the belt" if my Father knew I was even looking in his closet made me think twice. Instead I asked my Father at the dinner table and he decided to enroll me and my younger Brother into Gun Safety courses. After 2 weeks of classroom training we were taken as a group out to an open field to shoot at clay pigeons launched from a spring loaded sling. I raised my Grandpa's old gun to fire and took aim. I nervously pulled the trigger and the gun not only recoiled driving the lever to open the barrel into my left hand but the entire barrel exploded in my face. Thank goodness, the cut on my hand was the only casualty. The Adults were pretty shaken as well as my Father. That gun should never have been fired. However, I did receive my Jr Hunting license for NJ deer hunting. My Uncles who were real game Hunters took me out with them during the Deer Hunting Season that year. Shotguns are the only legal weapon allowed because a rifle bullet could potentially hit the nearby Houses. I was told by my Uncle to climb a tree in sit in the deer blind while they went off into the woods. I sat there for maybe an hour or two waiting for the deer to run by. Finally I heard some yelling coming from the woods which I wasn't sure what was going on. I did get exciting when a bush nearby started to shake. I took aim and started to squeeze the trigger. Again, thank goodness, I did not. A hunter walked out of the bush shortly after I nearly fired. From that point on in my life I have never fired a real gun. If I had pulled that triggered I may have killed a man.
