Bank of America ATM Made Me A Multi-millionaire

Shortly after 7:30 pm on June 10th, 2014, I was depositing a $3.80 rebate check with my debit card at the ATM of Bank of America (BOA) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (the BOA office was already closed for the day). To my great surprise, the ATM scanned the check with no problem but captured a set of numbers *623167929* instead of the $3.80. The printed receipt showed that I had just deposited $6,231,379.29. Voila: I was made a multi-millionaire.
About 9:00 am the next morning, I stopped by the BOA office and informed them the incident. I was told that the error had been corrected and my account was deposited the correct amount of $3.80. Ugh, a new multi-millionaire was minted and then dismantled in a matter of hours.
I hope the incident has caught BOA’s attention and the potential vulnerability in their ATM system can and will be fixed soon.
