Music Matters with Tajuan White
Mr White is now in his 10th year as a music educator. As the former high school band director and music teacher of Phoenix Academy in Chicago; Mr. White's bands have been the winners of several awards and competitions. His Chicago program has played for many notables including the US Navy, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Alma Powell (wife of General Colin Powell). The marching band was also one of the featured bands for a Northern Illinois University Huskies pregame and the Drum and Bugle program was 2007 city champions. Under his direction, the program which included Jazz, Marching, Drum and Bugle, and Concert bands was a finalist for a Grammy Enterprise Award for providing a high quality music education program.
Mr. White is currently the General Music Teacher and Band Director at Brighten Academy in Douglasville Georgia. He is also the Founder and Program Director of Musik Workx Academic Solutions LLC and oversees the music education programs of several schools throughout Atlanta. Musik Workx is a privately owned LLC that operates in the metro Atlanta area.
They say Music make the world go round, what sparked your interest and made you live out a life within music.
Music has always been my passion from the early days of hiphop to the current popular music. I have participated in music in various capacities my entire life. My earliest start may have been with the church choir. My mother was the choir director.
With the major budget cuts within education, and the future of music being jeopardized, what are you doing in Atlanta to save it?
The Atlanta area has seen major changes within the past few years in music education. Some counties have been forced to cut several music education positions. Through Musik Workx, we have been able to provide jobs for some of those teachers that lost their jobs. More importantly we were able to fill a void for many children and families throughout metro Atlanta that still have a strong desire to have a music education.
If you could change anything about the music industry, the music played, the artist selected for deals, what would it be and why?
My biggest concern with today’s music scene is that there is too much focus on the artist persona instead of the music itself. I would like to see more music on the radio that is more of a representation of fine art instead of a representation of fine marketing.
Now you are the founder and Owner of Musik Workx, LLC. What is that and how can people get involved with you movement.
Musik Workx is a company that offers music education programs for schools throughout metro Atlanta. Our 3 largest programs are afterschool band, orchestra, and pop choir. If you would like to find out how to be a part of one of our programs feel free to visit our website at www.musikworkx.com or call the office line at 404-260-7828.
