    Living with a chronic illness

How Lyme is killing my 30 year old daughter

Erica Valker is fighting for her life due to chronic Lyme disease. She has seen a minimum of 30 doctors most could not get rid of her fast enough saying they could not help her or that she was a difficult case. Before getitng ill Erica was a professional water skier throughout the world, Miss Teen Wisconsin 2000, Chicago's WLUP spokesmodel and a lover of life. We nearly lost her April 2013 due to negligence by a doctor.

We have been to the ER over 30 times in two years and our ER visits have only created more nightmares as no one has helped since they don't know what to do with Lyme. Cedars Sinai suggested we place her in a nursing home for the remainder of her life since she needed 24/7 care. This was after we asked for the best Infectious Disease doctor to evaluate her. They came back to tell us 3 ID Dr.s were consulted and "they had nothing to contribute" at this time. Not one of them came to evaluate her in person! She has been seen by doctors all over the west coast, midwest and D.C. We have been told she is the worst case these doctors have seen and it will take a team to get her better. She is a fighter and wants to live so she continues to struggle. She has a difficult time speaking, walking, vision problems, constant heart pain, severe head/neck pressure & lung pain/breathing problems to name some. She gets no nutrition as her organs do not function properly, she has lost 20 pounds and is so weak she cant get out of bed. She has a port in her chest so she can receive nutrients and at some point antiobiotics, which we know will have her more ill and likely wont cure her. This will cost roughly $7K per month and insurance will not cover this as the treatment is against the CDC's standard treatment protocol of 4-6 weeks.

Her story has been covered by Fox and WGN Chicago and her video can be found on youtube by searching "Erica Valker Lyme." Erica will be featured in the documentary "Under Our Skin 2."

We are trying to bring awareness to the growing epidemic as people are being misdiagnosed and turned away by doctors, insurance, and the government. People are dying and need help.
