Danakil Depression and the Salt Workers

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Ng Ngok Swee took this photo of a salt worker and his camels, during a trip to the Danakil Depression in Northern Ethiopia. The landscape is one of harshest on earth, with sweltering temperatures and wastelands of salt.

Ng Ngok Swee says, "There is a certain beauty that is very difficult to describe or capture." This iReport has been featured as the travel photo of the day.

Located in Northern Ethiopia, the Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on Earth. Yet there are workers mining salt in the extreme heat and transporting these slabs of salts to faraway markets. National Geographic called this the cruelest place on Earth. I spent two days in April in this area and temperature was in the high 40 plus degree C and reached a staggering 51 degree C when we drove across the desert.
