This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Raising a special needs child

    Child WITH special needs

I am a proud mom of two boys, one WITH special needs. I would like to thank you for your attention on parenting our very different children and to plead that they are NOT called “special needs children”! “Special needs” doesn’t refer to the milestones they might not be able to reach but to the accommodations they might need to enable them to achieve these milestones!

Media has a powerful influence on how our children are perceived by others and I truly hope you will ensure that they are going to be seen as CHILDREN first, regardless of whatever accommodations they might need to function in our society. Our kids are not diseased or sick per se, their bodies function differently and therefore WE need to make accommodations to the way we help them develop in better preparing them to be included in OUR world.

    Thank you for your understanding,
    A proud Mom
