This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Travel photo of the day

    Summer Palace, Beijing

A sultry evening after a hard rain, this photo shows a ferry crossing the Kunming Lake with Jade Spring Hill pagoda in the background. Much of the adjacent palace was destroyed in the second Opium War and the Boxer Rebellion. The Empress Dowager diverted funds from the Chinese navy to rebuild, an action that resulted in China's defeat during the Sino/Japanese war at the turn of the 20th century.
