Casey Kasem Starred at Nevada Test Site Protest

Casey Kasem will always live in my memory, not because of his radio show, but because he came out to the Nevada Test Site to join thousands of people protesting the testing of nuclear weapons in the desert there in March of 1988. He was the MC of the largest of our rallies, for which I served as Stage Manager. I have a photo of us together on that makeshift stage.

Imagine my delight when he invited me to discuss the rally program in his air conditioned white limo rather than in the blazing desert heat that we were used to, but which I never grew to like.

I admit to having been very surprised when Casey agreed to assist us. Certainly, while our protests had a certain progressive cachet in those days, attending one of our rallies in the sere desert that fronts the entrance to the Test Site was highly unusual. A number of celebrities indeed did so, but at that time Casey was the most listened to person in the world, according to his publicist, making his support particularly important.
