US-Iraqi youth institute perform dramatic play outside of the White House

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     A dramatic play depicting the turmoil in Iraq unfolded in front of the White House gates on June 21. It was part of a protest that Haitham Al-Mayahi and other members of the United States Iraqi Youth Institute, a student based organization, took part in orchestrating.

The group performed a scene from the play "Broken Dreams," to raise awareness for Iraqis affected by the recent terrorist attacks by ISIS. “The director of the play is Iraqi and the writing [shows] the pain that we feel as Iraqis these days," Al-Mayahi, who is a doctoral student at Howard University, said. "The terrorists are evil and kill without respect for any religion. The play shows the unity of Iraqis against the terrorist attacks, but at the same time, we are asking the American government to help.”

Al-Mayahi’s family is currently living in Baghdad and are affected by the recent violence. “They are shaken and don’t know what will happen, “ he said. He hopes “Broken Dreams,” which is not currently schedule to run in any theater, will show how everyone is affected by terrorism.
