“A Walk in Their Shoes” Virtual Dementia Experience Coming to Autumn Leaves of Rockwall

What is life like for the 340,000 Texans living with Alzheimer’s? The staff at Autumn Leaves of Rockwall, a specialized memory care community, dedicated to serving those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, will help answer that question during “A Walk in their Shoes,” a virtual dementia experience, on Thursday, June 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. The interactive experience is designed to simulate the same sensory deficits and physical challenges that individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia typically face on a daily basis. Attendees will take part in activities which limit their senses and make it difficult to think clearly or perform daily tasks. The public can participate in a 15-minute virtual dementia experience any time between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. or between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

In addition, Sharon Shields-Rios, R.N., Assessment and Training Nurse for Autumn Leaves memory care communities, will deliver an educational presentation titled “Not All Dementia is Created Equal: An Introduction to Alzheimer’s & Dementia,” during a complimentary lunch from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event at Autumn Leaves of Rockwall (225 E. Ralph Hall Parkway, Rockwall, TX 75032) is free and open to the public.

“The experience is eye-opening,” said Veronica Torres, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing – DFW for Autumn Leaves memory care communities. “It’s one of the only experiences available that gives you an idea of what someone with dementia feels every day – fear, nervousness, and confusion. You realize how much you rely on your senses of sight and touch to perform daily tasks. To have those physically restricted is a shock to the system.”

After each simulation, memory care experts will be available to answer questions.

“The virtual dementia experience allows professionals, families, and caregivers a brief look into the life of those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia,” said Amy Fleming, Director of Sales and Marketing for Autumn Leaves of Rockwall. “By seeing firsthand what living with Alzheimer’s is like, we all gain a better sense of how to provide more effective care. Participants will also walk away with a deepened sense of solidarity and empathy for those affected.”

As part of their training, all Autumn Leaves staff members participate in a virtual dementia experience. The exercise allows them to see the world through the residents’ eyes, and they use the knowledge gained to provide expert care.

“We encourage the public to come to the community and learn more about dementia,” said Torres. “Experiencing what someone with dementia goes through every day gives caregivers, families, and medical professionals the chance to rethink the way they approach the disease. It can help us all improve our interactions and communication so we can provide the best care possible.”
