The Legacy Preston Hollow Honors Fathers and Their Families at a Special Event

The Legacy Preston Hollow senior living community honored its resident dads and celebrated Father’s Day in a fun and unique way this year. Marty Ruiz provided a special live jazz performance for the residents and family members. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres were served, and everyone was encouraged to enjoy the boogie-woogie music of “Jazz for Dads” and an afternoon of fun.

“We had a wonderful time celebrating fatherhood at the event, and it was a nice way to pay tribute to the significant role dads play in all of our lives,” said Jerry Warren, executive director at The Legacy Preston Hollow. “Great dads should not only be honored and celebrated on Father’s Day or during the month of June, but they should be recognized all year long. This nostalgic musical event was a fun way for us to do that as a community.”

The Legacy Preston Hollow residents were able to travel back in time through the songs of their youth. Several sang along and enjoyed answering trivia questions Ruiz asked about artists of their era. The gathering was meaningful to the fathers and their families, and especially made an impact on Richard Woods who lives at The Legacy Preston Hollow. His three daughters and some of his grandchildren spent time with him at the event. Woods has a close relationship with his family, and he has important advice for other fathers to follow.

“It is so crucial to instill certain core values when you raise your children so they have a strong foundation and good morals,” said Woods. “It’s also just as important to let them develop their own interests and hobbies based on what comes naturally to them. As parents, it’s our job to fully support them in all areas.”

Like other residents’ family members who attended the event, Woods’ daughters appreciated the opportunity to celebrate at The Legacy Preston Hollow with their dad. They recall the many ways he has influenced their lives.
“Woodsy put family first and always had us sit down for a family dinner together each night,” recalls Julie Clancy, Woods’ youngest daughter. “He always came straight home from work at the same time to be with us and taught us the importance of being responsible, honest and trustworthy.”

From attending school events to encouraging them in all their activities, he always made sure that they were his priority. As a successful attorney in Dallas for decades, Woods worked hard to support his family. However, he believes there always must be a balance between a career and family time. He thinks that family should be the top priority for dads, and his daughters witnessed how he lived by that idea every day.

“I was born on Father's Day, and it is fun to celebrate when they fall on the same day,” said Woods’ daughter, Cindy Lindsley. “As the oldest child, I have always considered my dad to be understanding and a trusted advisor. Dad is a man of strong faith, and he instilled a strong work ethic in us. Woodsy is a family man! He showed us that we, as him family, came first.”

“I remember him taking the time to teach me to ride a bike running alongside me and holding onto the bike seat until I was steady,” described Woods’ middle daughter Diana Eppler. “It’s funny how looking back there are so many little moments and memories that may seem insignificant at the time but mean so much when you’re older and able to truly appreciate them.”

The Legacy Preston Hollow staff members are proud of their resident fathers. They look forward to making them feel special throughout the year, as well as during a celebration again next year on Father’s Day.
