The Choking Game with Director Lane Shefter Bishop
What teenagers think is a cool game is something that can end in tragedy. Many kids have tried it and most parents are unaware of it. The game known as “ The Choking Game”, can be played amongst friends or with themselves in order to get high. Studies show that 1 in 16 kids have tried the choking game at least once. 86% of parents report not knowing about the choking game, prior to their child’s involvement.
Lane Shefter Bishop is the director and one of the executive producer of the film “ The Choking Game” which stars Freya Tingley who played in ABC’s, “ Once Upon A Time." In the movie, Freya plays the lead role of Taryn in this thought-provoking drama. Alex Steele from the show, “ DeGrassi” plays the charasmatic new girl Nina. Peri Gilpin best known from the role of Roz on Frasier, plays as Taryn’s mother, Heidi. Other executive producers include Orly Adelson, Jon Eskenas and Marlyn Atlas. The movie is based on the YA novel “Choke” written by Diana Lopez. Bishop says, “ Choke, came to me as a middle-grade book. I enjoyed the book and I called a screenwriter who had a young adult voice that would be perfect to write this screenplay. We developed the script, took it to Lifetime and we got the green light.” Choke was published by Scholastic in 2012 and adapted for the screen by Jen Klein. The film,“ The Choking Game” airs on Lifetime, July 26, 2014 at 8PM PT/ET. It is encouraged that all parents and teenagers tune into the film about this serious matter that teenagers think is a harmless game. “ What I want the audience to get out of this film is awareness about this dangerous game. I find it frightening that 1 out of 16 kids have tried the game and 86% of parents are unaware of the game. That’s a scary comparison. When I was filming inside of the school there were kids saying, ‘oh my God I’ve played that game’, Bishop says. The goal of this film is to raise awareness and hopefully parents will talk to their kids about the seriousness of the game. According to the Center For Disease Control, nearly 800-1000 kids between the ages of 10-19, die every year from the choking game. With Bishop being a director for many years, it was not hard for her to direct this film. “ I already knew the film in and out from reading the book and developing the screenplay to make it more teen than middle-grade. The cast was great to work with as well”, Bishop added.
Being as though Bishop works in the industry, she had some great advice for screenwriters and writers who are interested in working in this business. As a screenwriter who doesn’t live in Los Angeles, a lot of writers often want to know if you really have to make the move in order to make it. Bishop states, “ It’s good to do because you are close to the industry people. No one wants to have to plan a meeting and try to work out schedules due to different time zones. If the writer is in LA, they can meet face-to face as opposed to a phone or online meeting. “
Lane Shefter Bishop is a multi-award winning producer/director who has received numerous accolades for her work including an Emmy, six Telly Awards, a Videographer Award, three Communicator Awards, a Sherril C. Corwin Award, an Aurora Award, a New York Festivals Award and the DGA Fellowship Award for Episodic Television.
