My American Dream is to be self-sustaining.

My husband and I want something simple - a way to be self-sustaining without debt. We could do this on a few acres of land; however we dreamed a little bigger. We wanted enough land to not only provide food for us, but those of family and friends that may fall on hard times. About 4 years ago we went on a search for a large piece of land. A year later we found what we were looking for....a private place close to the mountains but in a climate suitable for growing food. We ended up purchasing 68 acres in eastern Kentucky. It is perfect for our needs and those of extended family. The dream now is to get there....without debt.

Now we are on a mission to pay off the land and the few bills we have. We live as simple as possible. We are both nurses and while we enjoy the work we do, we want to just live on the land and work "from home" as farmers. We plan to build a home with solar and wind for energy. We plan to have a few farm animals and a large garden, fruit trees, and berry bushes throughout. We may even build a greenhouse for year round produce.

Farming in a self-sustainable way was the backbone of this country. It kept families together and close-knit. The dream of the white picket fence to me is over-rated. Spending hours upon hours each day away from family - everyone going off in different directions each morning (work, school, daycare, etc) is not desirable to either my husband nor myself. We enjoy being together - we enjoy being with our children. We chose to home school because we never wanted anyone else being responsible for our children's morals and spirit. The idea of being together and working next to each other on our beautiful land is our dream. And we will be living that dream hopefully in the next 3 -4 years.
