Maui: Tropical paradise, or Hell hole?

The island of Maui. A tropical paradise? Or, toxic hell hole?

There is a huge air quality problem on Maui. It is the sugar industry. Multiple times during the year the sugar cane fields are covered in accelerates and set ablaze. Toxic smoke plumes into the air and what the locals call "Black Snow" falls upon the communities of Kahului, Kihei, and others including the iconic town of Paia, the home of Willie Nelson and NBA legend Don Nelson.

During the burning season locals complain of headaches, fever and bronchial complications. In addition to that, all it takes is a drive down Hansen Street past the sugar mill to take in the filth, the stench and the pollution. Recently, I drove past the sugar mill during a rainstorm. The storm drains had backed up and Hansen was flooded. The water residue that got on my truck left behind a greasy residue that I had to remove using paint thinner. Sick!

This problem is vastly ignored by local officials due to the mafia type control that the sugar mill (HCNS) has over the government officials. Locals hate it and yet the burning, the filth, the pollution and the stench continues.

There is a real story here that could make headlines and cause real change if the truth were to be exposed. I'd love to see some air samples taken. I'm betting that the allwable saturation of toxins are well beyond the EPA allowable guidelines. This country is now all about green energy and carbon footprints now but there is a major disconnect in regards to sugar on Maui. It is appalling to me that the EPA has not stepped in to stop this nonsense.

Seriously, if some good reporter split this story wide open with some great investigative journalism they would win the Pulitzer.

Please help. Please investigate and report this story. You will not be disappointed at the many layers of corruption and government malfeasance in regards to this problem.
