Jobs reduce poverty, says Phl official
“We are focused on providing greater employment to a greater number of people,” Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda told a Palace press briefing.
Lacierda said domestic sectors, including manufacturing and tourism, create various economic activities.
He said the country has attracted big-ticket investments in manufacturing which will employ more people.
“For instance, when we were in Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe mentioned that they are interested also in the manufacturing companies; auto manufacturing companies coming into the Philippines. So we have always said that good governance is good economics,” Lacierda said.
President Benigno S. Aquino III made his one-day working visit to Japan last June 24 to meet with Prime Minister Abe.
“So we have always said that good governance is good economics. Foreign investors, domestic businessmen will see the benefit of having a government... an administration that will provide an even playing field for the business sector,” he noted.
Further, Lacierda said the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is teaching a number of people perform tourism-related activities which do not require high-tech learning experience.
“We also have agribusiness, logistics and other productive sectors that can generate higher employment,” he added.
Lacierda believes that jobs creation can lead to a reduction in poverty.
Poverty incidence among Filipinos declined to 24.9 percent in the first semester of 2013 from 27.9 percent during the same period the previous year.
“We want to hasten the diminution of poverty by engaging in all these activities that would seek to provide employment for a greater number of people,” he added.
