#MyWritingProcess ~ Blog Tour for Charron Monaye of Pen Legacy Entertainment
I’ve been invited to join the #mywritingprocess blog tour by Sanya Hudson, the author of books, "A Love I can Trust" and "the Season of Love", along with the host of “Sanya On-Air” (www.AllBlackRadio.com, Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST). Before I move forward, let me introduce myself. My name is Charron Monaye, a Philadelphia naive who has inspired audiences as a dynamic Songwriter, Poet, Author, Playwright, CNN iReport Journalist and Advocate against Bullying & Domestic Violence for more than 20 years. I have released 2 books of poetry, “My Side of the Story” and ““Living, Laughing, and Loving My Way Through” ; considered for a total of 8 Grammy Awards for my Songwriting; and penned/produced a total of 4 plays. You can learn more about me and my works at www.penlegacy.com!!
My instructions are to answer four questions for you:
1) What am I working on?
I am currently working on the production of two plays, “Why Can’t We Be Friends” (Anti-Bullying Play) and “Momma’s Baby, Daddy’s Maybe” (Child Custody Awareness). In addition to producing and penning these productions, I am currently publishing a novel by La’Mena Marie (Writer from Chicago, IL) and penning my third book entitled “Why Me, Why Not, ME, which will be released under my publishing company, Pen Legacy Publishing!”
2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
My work discusses, spreads awareness, and creates dialogue on topics that are often silenced and ignored in our communities. I pride myself on creating stories that not only entertain, but educate the receiver in more ways than one.
3) Why do I write what I do?
My pen gives a voice to the voiceless, hope to the depressed, and favor to the lost!! Writing for me, is my own personal therapy but it is my way to reassure others that they are not alone in this thing called “Life”. I often say, “Every smile is not heartfelt, some are meant to hide pain and/or overshadow misery, so as a writer my purpose is to touch, inspire, and motivate. I use my pen as a method to bless others, while blessing myself.
4) How does my writing process work?
All of my creations, from my lyrics, to my books, and now to my plays are written on my laptop in my bedroom while either watching cartoons with my son, Craig, or while listening to music, preferably the late great Teena Marie. My writing process is simple because everything I write comes from a place within a personal experience, lesson, or temptation. I may have a sweet tea from McDonalds or an ice cold Pepsi. to keep me energized because when the pen is up and/or the fingers are typing, it's going to a LONG night!! But to give you a step by step of how I pen a masterpiece, here goes:
1. Life gives me an ugly or happy situation
2. Decide which aspect of the situation I want to share
3. Figure out which industry I want to share with (Poetry, Songwriting, or Theatre)
4. I get my laptop, go to my room, and start writing
5. Edit or read aloud to make sure emotional content is present and it's believable/relatable
6. Submit to a contest or have a theatrical table read to obtain feedback
7. Edit again with feedback ideas
8. Hire Actors and/or a Singer to help me bring my words to life
That's my writing process, simple and rewarding.
