Dramatic Storm Clouds Form In the Midwest

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Ever see clouds like this? mediaman saw these heaping formations the night of June 30 from the east side of the Mississippi River in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. “I truly felt I was in another world when I looked up,” he said. "It was like the entire sky had been hand-painted ... with hues of yellow, orange, pale green, blue, and grey. The colors kept changing, and so did the clouds." These rolling clouds are known as mammatus and typically associated with strong thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

As severe weather swept through the Midwest, dramatic cloud patterns followed. Leaving in its wake of shoreline flooding, downed trees and power lines, the weather front created a spectacular display of clouds throughout the region. This group of images was taken from the shoreline of the Mississippi River north of Stoddard, WI at Goose Island and from the ridge tops near Chaseburg, Wisconsin as the sun began to set.
