This iReport is part of an assignment:
The Buy Now Button on Twitter: More Marketing from the 140 Character Giant
Twitter have been very slowly moving more and more towards monetizing their service since they went public. This began around a month ago when they added the new Twitter and Amazon cart feature.
It appears as if Twitter is looking to expand this to include “Buy Now” buttons, as reported by Re/code. These buttons first started appearing on Monday, June 30. No one knows for sure what is going on as the buttons did not work when clicked on, and Twitter would not comment on the story.
The Buy Now Button on Twitter: More Marketing from the 140 Character Giants
What has been discovered so far is that these buttons have only popped up within the mobile version of the app, and that some users reported being sent to a page within Twitter that looked to be some sort of checkout page.
This comes after Fancy, a shopping app pitched to Twitter back in January, was uncovered. As frequent Twitter users well know, nothing came of that app being pitched as there is still no direct purchase options from within Twitter.
At this time, there is nothing but speculation to go ‘round. Furthermore, the tweets in question have been altered to no longer include the Buy Now button. Check out the account that posted the Buy Now button to see for yourself. Twitter has not made any official statement, the Buy Now button on Twitter is not working for everyone, but you can be sure that Twitter is definitely working on further monetizing their service.
What the Buy Now Button on Twitter could mean for your business
If ever there was a clue to businesses that they should be on Twitter, this is it. Twitter’s business accounts have been largely about building trust and building an audience that listen to your brand story. With the Twitter Buy Now button, or something similar, looming on the 140 character horizon, now is the time to build your Twitter followers and social proof.
Having a good core of Twitter followers already built up could be your key to having an audience which is not only attentive, but could soon be easier to monetize than ever before. This is your best chance at an impulse buy since a wise person invented the chocolate bar rack at the checkout line!
At this time, there is no official timeline as to when a Buy Now button on Twitter will officially appear. That’s great for you as a business and marketer as you know that you have some time to build a following. You have to act now, don’t let your competition take your market, and have them taking your sales on Twitter.
