Is Border Patrol Necessary? By: Leslie Corado & Bobby Jones

Each day, 1,000 illegal crossings into the U.S. occur in the southern border of Texas.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, students from KIPP High School and IDEA Mission College Prep went to the border patrol station in Brownsville, Texas.
Students were able to interact with Border Patrol in many different aspects and the officers’ point of views. The students were then taken into the detention center where illegal immigrants were held after being apprehended. The number of people that are in each block of the detention center exceed the holding capacity at 600 instead of 250. The immigrants are constantly moved from station to station in large groups. Young children come without guardians and are moved into orphanages in their home country if their parents are not located.

Immigration laws should not be as harsh to people who come looking for jobs on the U.S. side. If they are apprehended but are not seen as a threat, the immigrating people should be able to go through the border; others that pose threats should be put in the detention centers.

Most of the people that come to the U.S. are not looking to commit treason, they are simply looking for a safe place to start fresh, in a country of freedom and opportunity, many seeking asylum. In the detention center, there was a face that stood out; a sacred little boy. He looked to be about 7 years old . His eyes reflected the feeling of doubt. He knew that the center was not where he was supposed to be, but at his age, he did not know where to go from here. What started with a feeling of hope and a fresh start was now fear and doubt.

On the other hand , others feel that the wall and the fences are a necessity to keep the U.S. protected from intruders, corruption, and narcotics. An example of intruders is the 11th of September 2001. There were a few men who invaded an airplane, took over it and crashed the planes, which destroyed the twin towers. Lots of people died in this tragic event. This just so happened to be one of the main reasons that border patrol was put into place. “I know that the United States secures its southern boundary a little more than its other borders, but Mexico happens to be the country with the most traffic coming into America,” based on what a border patrol agent stated on the tour.

What level of border security is truly needed?
