The Other Face of the Coin By: Karla Sandoval & Erika Sanchez

Although everyone has a different opinion, most Latinos would agree that the Border Patrol officers are the “bad guys.” It is believed that the border patrol officers are the ones that stop women, men and children from crossing the border to safety, and they prevent those seeking asylum or fulfillment of the American Dream from accomplishing their goal.

Recently there has been a lot of news about the border patrol taking advantage of their position, but not everything we hear is true. The media can change stories for the purpose of publicity. How would anybody really know what happened if the other side of the story is no longer living? Who is there to say that what the people hear and what has been published is the truth?

However, the border patrol officers are not the ones who should take the fault. Although, there are always those who take advantage of their position and create a bad reputation for all, it does not mean that all are cruel, or mistreating the captured immigrants. At the end of the day, they are just doing their jobs. Although some may disagree with what they are doing, the reality is, they are trying to prevent illegal activity. There can be moments when the border patrol may feel threatened and will use violence against the immigrants. It does not mean their goal is to kill the ones that want to cross. The officers believe that the wall was not built to stop immigrants from coming, but that it was created to decrease immigration.

With so many people crossing over, the officers need to be ready for anything that would come across them. Walking in the heat for days is very tiring which is why a lot of immigrants give up at the end. However, the officers are ready to help those immigrants by providing water and taking them to the detention facilities. All these reasons are a reminder that there are always two sides of a coin.
