A community is a place where people can come together and provide support and aid for each other. The best way to improve a community is by volunteering and putting others needs before one’s own. La Posada Providencia is a community in itself as it unites various people to become accustomed to life in a new country. Volunteers are able to facilitate the transition into the new life-style that the immigrants are learning.
La Posada Providencia is an organization managed by two nuns whose goal is to help out legal immigrants with a place to stay while their legal status is improved or fixed. This non-profit organization has a big impact on these immigrants, who may not even speak English or might be in this country alone. La Posada Providencia is a self-sufficient place that has its own garden with crops used to feed the residents of the shelter. In the time that they spend there, the nuns ensure that the immigrants are taught how to speak and understand the English language, U.S. currency, and responsibility. The facility has housed people from over 70 countries with various beliefs and religions. The entire organization is run by only four employees and a handful of volunteers. Some young volunteers become so passionate about the cause that they are willing to give their personal time.
For example, one high school student spent her summer teaching English to children from Africa. The nuns were so thankful that as a young person she was willing to help out strangers to improve their future. The clients also show their gratitude to all the people who enjoy helping out and teach them about the United States of America.
Although one person alone cannot have such an impact in this big world, volunteerism is an important way to provide help. Not only is volunteering beneficial to those being helped, but also to the volunteer themselves. While helping out one learns about issues in the community and what needs to be done in order to improve society.
