The best part about living in Hawaii, specifically the Big Island, is that there are still plenty of places off the beaten path that most tourists don't go to. My favorite places to visit on the weekends are the places where I feel like I have the whole island to myself. Whether its an empty lava tube, a deserted beach, a desolate road, or an enchanted forest, I never get tired of all the hidden jewels on the state's largest island. Most of what is on the postcards is perfectly groomed resorts, lava oozing into the ocean, or waterfalls in the middle of the jungle. The pictures above are ones I've chosen where there was no other human soul nearby when we were there. So even though Hawaii is known for its tourism and bumper-to-bumper traffic in some places, it's nice to know that there are still countless places on the Big Island where you can still feel like a castaway stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!
