A Beautiful Delicate Arch Sunset
I read back in 2009 that the only time that you can view the sun setting inside of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, was one week before and one week after the Winter Solstice. I first tried to photograph it in December 2009 and then again in December 2011 when I captured this image. After close to two hours of waiting, with frozen fingers, I got this shot. After the sun set I started down the trail. I slipped on ice on the ramp above a drop of 25 feet or so. I managed to stop myself from going over the edge, but dislocated my left shoulder in the process. I popped my shoulder back in and hiked the 1.5 miles out. Not to be totally discouraged by my shoulder (that kept me awake all night), I went to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park the next morning to shoot the sunrise.
