Chicago Mayor Responds To Violent Weekend

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     “A common ‘joke’ in Chicago was that we couldn't tell the difference between fireworks and gunshots. We soon learned that most of those sounds were actually gunshots,” says lifelong Chicago resident Zach Isaacs, referring to the Fourth of July weekend, when more than 60 people were shot and nine were killed. Isaacs, a freelance writer, went to the Kids Off The Block community center in the Roseland neighborhood on Monday to see what Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had to say about the deadly weekend.

“The good people of Roseland are stronger than gang members with guns,” the mayor said Monday. “We’re going to build our city up, community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood, until the entire city has a sense of a shared future together.”

Isaacs, who lives nearby in the Chatham neighborhood, is fed up with the violence. “Personally, I felt very angry and despondent about the state of inner-city communities. There is so much division among race and class that it is hard for people to come together to make a difference.”
