The Army comes to Coney Island!

The United States Army came to Coney Island Saturday looking for recruits. They set up a booth and stand on Stillwell Ave. You can see the famous Parachute Jump in the distance on the first photo.
They put out a chin bar and push-up apparatus for people to test their strength and see if they are fit.
At the same time they were giving out free water canteens and pamphlets about the Army and you could join.
I talked to two of the recruiting officers, one from Kentucky, another from New Mexico, now living in Brooklyn, both in their early 40's and told me they each had five years left to go before full retirement. I thought that was pretty good as they both joined when they were eighteen. I'm older than them and told them maybe they did the right thing and I didn't because I still have to work. They just laughed..
They were very polite and nice to talk to and I asked them if enrollment was up or down. They said it was up again because of unemployment amongst young people. In fact, they said they had 36 people sign up Thursday, right there on Stillwell in Coney Island..
    Thank you.
