This iReport is part of an assignment:
Life in China
Crazy expensive gourmet
Taken in Shanghai, China. This illustrates just how far the new middle- and upper-classes will go to get the best of the best (and show-off while doing it).
This Haagen-Dazs ice cream cost 33 Yuan (aka rmb), which is about USD $5.36. The real shocker is that this very small container is 74 grams (or 2.6 ounces). Personally, I estimate that about a dollar per bite.
In fact, Haggen-Daz is so popular in China that they have upscale sit-down restaurants (reminiscent of a 5-star hotel lobby) and their Hollywood A-list poster-boy right now is Bradley Cooper.
Most big companies are very strategic when it comes to marketing their products in China because they want to meet the tastes of the local people. So this ice cream, for example, is a green tea flavor.
