Shark Attack on Maui's North Shore Closes Popular Beach

Today, Wednesday July 16 at roughly 5:30pm Hawaii time, a popular beach was closed due to an apparent shark attack.

Firefighters on the scene confirmed that a man had been bitten on the west end of Paia Bay, on Maui's north shore.

The man was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The firefighter notifying beach-goers that the beach was closed said the man was a local who swam there every day, and that he wasn't very far out.

"His foot was shredded," said one firefighter.

The beach was closed to swimmers, although there were no official signs posted. Firefighters were on the scene notifying people, and there was a cardboard box, apparently made by the Paia Youth & Cultural Center (located on the beach directly in front of where it happened), that read "Closed Because Shark."

This hits home for me for several reasons. I had just gotten out of the water at a different beach, Paia Bay is where I learned to surf and still one of my favorite beaches...
