Child rape: Thousands protest in Bangalore for Justice

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Tensions are running high in Bangalore, India, after a community was rocked with news that a 6-year-old school girl was raped by school staff members. meeravijayan photographed community members and parents protesting on the streets of Bangalore, demanding justice for the school girl on July 19. "A lot of the parents were visibly angry and worried, but it was a relatively peaceful protest which was aimed at questioning the police and the school authorities for their defiant attitude and their inaction,” she said. "I am shocked and disgusted. A few days ago, a young girl was sexually assaulted in the neighborhood that I live in. Crimes against women and children seem to be rising by the day in India."

Thousands of people poured onto the streets in Bangalore to protest against the authorities of Vibgyor High School, where a 6-year old student was sexually assaulted recently. It is believed that two people employees of the school - a gym teacher and a security guard - assaulted the girl. Although it was a relatively peaceful protest, tensions were running high as this is the second serious sexual assault case in the city. People were extremely frustrated and angry that the school authorities were being defensive and that the police did not act on time. The school has over 3000 students and a lot of parents are worried that they will not be able to find an alternative option for education for their children if the school's license is revoked. I talked to a parent whose child attends the same school and he expressed his concern about sending his daughter to the school is security measures are not taken to protect children within school grounds.
