    Introductory Questions to Ask Your New SEO Clients


    When you’re working in the online industry, you’re most likely running a business where you’re going to have clients. If you offer software, SEO services, content services, social media, or any type of marketing help, you’re going to have to ask your clients initial questions in order to make the most out of the relationship (In fact, most industries have a company working with a client, even if that client is a customer shopping around your store, but that’s a story for another day). It is your job as the company to fully understand who it is you’re working with and use that information to offer the best work you can. The problem: This isn’t always easy.


    Many companies jump right in and forget the importance of having a quick Q&A section (that should be done regularly). It’s tough to know what to ask, but important to understand that it’s never too late to learn more information about those you’re working with.


    Top Questions to Ask New SEO Clients


    If you need a little bit of help, don’t sweat it. Below are a few different questions that you should consider asking your new client:


    ·       What makes your company unique? Every company needs to have something that makes them different than the competition. The business should have a clear purpose, and you need to hear from the client what purpose they believe it servers. Even if it seems obvious, don’t assume. You want to know what the person in charge is thinking—not what everyone else is assuming.


    ·       What can you tell us about your audience? When it comes to audience, you want to know who they think their target audience is (usually it should be a few different types of personas), the time in which a customer remains a customer, as well as how that audience can interact and convert with the current website.


    ·       How are you currently making money? Figure out which pages are conversion pages, the current conversion rates, the revenue the company is making in regards to organic efforts, and whether or not PPC is a part of the equation.


    ·       What are your SEO expectations? See what the client knows about SEO. They may have certain keyword terms they want to rank for, SEO experiences they’ve had in the past that they want to repeat (or not repeat), or SEO goals they hope to see. It’s also a good idea to ask about competitors as well as some offline marketing so that you can get the whole picture of what you’re working with.


    ·       Can you give us access to your resources? Most companies have a web developer and their own analytics started. See if you can have access to these things and determine just how much behind-the-scenes you’ll be granted. See what type of budget they have available and what they’re involved with (PR agencies, partnerships, charities, etc.). Also ask about a blog and be sure you will have access to it!


    As discussed above, it’s worth reiterating the idea that you should always be asking questions of your client. Introductory questions are very important to help set you on the right path, but ask questions as you go along and things change. In many cases, you’ll be asking the exact same questions.


    Extra Things to Consider when Meeting a New SEO Client


    We talked with Scott Langdon, managing partner of SEO Company HigherVisibility, who explained that it’s important to remember that it’s not all about asking questions—it’s about being involved. He said, “Do your part by reading their blog and press releases, sign up for their newsletter, check out some of their employees on LinkedIn or Google, and poke around the website to analyze different landing pages and lead generation forms.”
