Stunning Monsoon Lightning Show - Arizona

A fast moving monsoon storm plummets Phoenix, Az and brings a stunning electric light show. Crawlers filled the sky, with lightning strikes touching down at a very fast rate.

This storm was started in the Showlow, AZ and made its way to Phoenix, Az in 2-3 hrs (178 miles). It was moving very fast East to West. We met the storm as it was hitting North East Phoenix area. The lightning was so intense that we could not take more than a handful of pictures. The storm dropped the temperature nearly 40 degrees and produce hailed in the middle of summer in AZ. Lightning and hail was very intense with near zero visibility at times. We had to leave the area and seek shelter for our car. This storm grew in size to cover the entire Phoenix metro area.

As the storm passed over Phoenix, we chased the storm to the West side of town. This storm generated one of the most intense lightning shows we have seen in a long time in Arizona. I ended up taking this shot as the storm was leaving the Phoenix area. Our trip started around 9pm that night and it ended at sunrise. We spent all night chasing storms and catching a beautiful sunrise over the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Arizona.
