    Pelican "Painting"


    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Ken Howard was at the Elkhorn Slough estuary on Monterey Bay shooting photos of otters when he captured this image of a pelican. See below to learn how he achieved this effect.

    The photo was taken on Elkhorn Slough, a seven-mile long estuary with its mouth in the middle of northern California’s Monterey Bay coastline. The slough is habitat for over 300 bird species.

    Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) are a common sight along the CA coast.

    I got the “painterly” look in this image by shooting with a hand-held camera, panning the 200mm lens to follow the bird’s flight, and using a slow shutter speed.
