    Birds of Amsterdam

I was in Amsterdam from early to mid-July of this year.

My husband and I rented a houseboat on the Amstel River and were quite delighted to see so many beautiful birds come around.

We encountered a spunky duck that would jump up on the deck of the houseboat every morning and join us for breakfast as we watched the boats go by, backdropped by Amsterdam's iconic row houses.

We also saw several grey herons. They are very large birds that have become so accustomed to humans that they will walk right up to you on the street and steal whatever food you might be carrying in your hands.

We also enjoyed having a family of coots and their tiny hatchlings entertain us with their unexpected whistling sounds and silly antics. The coot parents were so very devoted, attentive and protective of their hatchlings. If a duck wandered nearby, the adult coot would pound its wings against the water, splashing and squawking loudly, scaring the intruder away.
