    The lure of lighthouses

    Portland Head Light, Maine

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     RichInLesta found this lighthouse 'is one of the most scenic that Maine has to offer, and one of the most photographed. What drew me here was the perfect setting in which it sits. There are no obstructions anywhere within the photographic field of view, it stands looking directly Eastward, providing the possibility for a spectacular sight when the sun rises, and the surrounding rocky coast can add a great element of adventure to the photos. There’s also enough natural plant life that can provide additional interest to the scene. My specific intent was to capture the lighthouse at the break of dawn, which I was able to do in a number of shots.' He also made a few alterations: 'For this exercise, I was shooting three images (normal exposure, two stops underexposed, and two stops overexposed) and combining them in Photomatix PRO. Since I was planning on sometimes shooting directly into the rising sun, this method is the only way to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene. But other than the stacking and minor adjustments to the vibrancy and contrast, and cropping to 8 x 10, they are otherwise unaltered.'

While my wife and daughter were off to visit family in Scotland, I took a few days to drive North from my home in Massachusetts to the coast of Maine. I went there because I wanted to photograph some lighthouses...and there are very few places I can think of that are better to do that than in Maine. These are some of my favorite shots.
