Guardians of the Galaxy in 3D review

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Joyce Chow was skeptical about seeing the latest Marvel film 'Guardian's of the Galaxy' because the characters are not as popular as many of the other heroes in the Marvel Universe. After hearing others talk up the movie at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con she decided to take a risk and attend a screening of the film Thursday night.

The music, storyline and characters kept her captivated. "They're so intriguing you never leave your seat," said Chow, who believes she got her money's worth. 'Guardian's of the Galaxy' is currently in wide release.

When we first saw the previews, we thought the premise of the movie was ridiculous and decided to buy tickets only after we heard the buzz at the International Comic-Con 2014 in San Diego. Then we noticed the number of preview showings and the rate at which reserved seating was being taken. Tonight we parked the highest ever in a parking lot structure where we typically see movies and have been monitoring for over 5 years on preview nights before the official opening of movies.

Marvel‘s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is movie about anti-heroes motivated by the comic book industries trademark of orphans led by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) who calls himself Star Lord. He discovers he’s the target after stealing an orb whose powers he later discovers that is sought by the villains of the galaxy, most notably Ronan who seeks to destroy his planet. He is joined by a raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a tree namd Groot (Vin Diesel), the femme fatale Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) to create the “Guardians of the Galaxy” team which saves the planet.

It’s family entertainment with plenty of humor such as places called Nowhere where there are no rules, the best talking lines by a talking raccoon, and some violence in fighting from the superhero team, but you’ll be glad to know that no raccoons nor trees were harmed.

Go to a theatre with a great sound system as the Awesome Mix soundtrack 1 is probably one of the best soundtracks for movies you’ll hear in years followed by the Awesome Mix soundtrack 2, which we’re expecting to be in the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Not only had we heard buzz about it, but at the end, it tells you basically there’s another one coming.

We saw the first preshowing available in 3D on XD Extreme Digital Cinema Real D 3D. Almost an oxymoron, it was shot in 3D by cinematographers that knew what they doing in 3D with action coming toward the camera and missing the dizzying swish pans.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" ended to a large applause both at the ending of the movie and at the end of the credits. We didn’t see anyone move for additional refreshments and snacks during the 2 hour movie. We paid for our tickets and in retrospect would do it again.

Would we pay to see this film, we did.
