    The lure of lighthouses

    Point Arena Lighthouse

I took this photo of the Point Arena Lighthouse while on a road trip with my son up the California Coast Highway 1. It was a beautiful sunny day, however clouds started rolling in at sunset giving it almost a stormy look.
The lighthouse is located about 130 miles north of San Francisco. Lighthouse is situated on the closest point of land to the Hawaiian Islands in the Continental United States. The lighthouse was built in 1870 but due to an earthquake in 1906 the original lighthouse was torn down due to damage. The new lighthouse (as seen today) was first lit in 1908. The lighthouse was featured in the final scenes of the movie "Forever Young".
